Koeweiden Postma is a design agency based in Amsterdam creating brand identity, packaging, corporate and communication design. Their work is simple and powerful and directly communicates ideas that are based on content and research.

The three identities featured here are all derived from architecture and landscape design.

The Amsterdam Music Theatre logo takes the facade of Holzbauer and Dam’s building and treats it as a grid to create a unique monogram for the theatre. It retains the flexibility to infill it with sub-identities for specific performances.

The NHL University of Applied Sciences project considers the sloped building design by Herman Hertzberger as a basis for the identity. Signage is applied orthogonally to the facade of the building and cropped at the angle of the structural trusses. When the identity is applied to graphic material, it takes the angles as seen in perspective to create a dynamic and structured logotype.

The OKRA identity for a landscape architecture firm is based on topographic lines typically found on a civil drawings that describe the contours of landforms. With a simple logo mark placed centrally on material, the contour lines weave in and out of the letterforms for an infinite number of variations.

e-Types is a Copenhagen-based strategic brand and design firm. They are the inevitable go-to agency in Denmark for their leadership in big ideas and their “smash the world” attitude. When Architectural Engineering, a sub-division of the Dutch international consultancy firm, Grontmij Carl Bro, approached e-Types for a new identity, they created a refined image that communicates their platform.

The description of the project mentions that the identity communicates the company’s cross-disciplinary approach. This seems like the parti for the major ribbon graphic, crossing the page from left to right. It’s flexibility allows for a different set of layouts to work based on the background of the material. The typography is strong and structural, connoting the strength of the company.

Stop Rotating the Patriots Logo!

Patriots Logo

As an avid New England sports fan, I felt the need to comment on an issue I’m overwhelmed with everyday as I drive around town. With so much recent success, more and more New England Patriots fans are showing their loyalty to the team by wearing the logo on their vehicles. The only thing is, they apply the logo with the edge of the three corner hat lined perfectly vertical. This is wrong! Stop doing it! Replace your stickers as shown above. Thanks.

IABR Identity by Stout/Kramer

The International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) is an international biennale focused on urban research and architecture as a public concern. The event that runs every two years, is centered around exhibitions on architecture and urban design and is open to professionals and the public. The identity was designed by Stout/Kramer, a Dutch design agency, who see themselves as “editors and directors of communication.”

The varying logotype features two overlapping layers reminiscent of hatches on architectural drawings, which also seems to refer to the biennale event. While the logotype is successful, it feels like there’s a disconnect between it and the monospace type used in stationery and print materials. Nevertheless, it works well overall.

See more variations of the logo at the Stout/Kramer site, and learn more about the IABR.

PLP ARCHITECTURE-Partners

Five partners from KPF’s London office split last year to form their own practice, reports Architectural Record. After failing to buyout the satellite office, partners Lee Polisano, David Leventhal, Fred Pilbrow, Karen Cook, and Ron Bakker, departed to start their own office, PLP Architecture. At KPF, the team was responsible for such projects as the Heron Tower and The Pinnacle (not pictured above due to copyright issues) and already have quite a few projects in the UK with their new firm of over 70.

The news story has had some popularity again due to the recent identity design images posted by Pentagram earlier this month. The new identity couldn’t be more different. Compare the bold, serif KPF logo to the thin, sans-serif stencil logotype of PLP. It really differentiates the new practice from the former and I commend them for hiring a prominent design firm like Pentagram to distinguish the new brand.

Check out more images at Pentagram and keep an eye out for the new PLP Architecture site.
